Hey there, it’s Kristen!

I am a social media creative based in Los Angeles and a recent graduate from UC Berkeley! I am passionate about building thriving communities and helping brands convey their stories through visual solutions.

An enthusiastic learner.

While studying at my university, I tried to learn from as many areas of knowledge as possible with the hope of finding solutions to complicated and interdisciplinary issues. Now, I intend on taking a similar approach in the working world. Whether it be learning the basics of web design, video editing, or data analytics, I am constantly looking to learn how to be better at what I do.

I am currently exploring…

I am being honest when I say this: I REALLY ENJOY RESEARCH. I fall into a new digital rabbit hole every day. I love being obsessed about my work; strengthening my skills feel like increasing my stats (like a little RPG game!) and learning more about the world around me.

Dedicated to social justice and community activism.

Growing up in LA as a Korean-American queer femme, I am dedicated to utilizing whatever skills I gain to ultimately help those around me and make the world a better place. Because of this, I have found deep love in supporting community activist efforts and participating whenever I can. Whether it’s speaking on a panel hosted by ACLU about Black Ally-ship, organizing a Student Diversity Leadership Conference, or reading about systemic oppression and US/Global history, I intend to continue following my creative passions while never losing sight of my civic duty to help those around me.

Trying to find the beauty in everything.

I am incredibly interested in the dual existence of those who grew up on the internet. As a kid, I found myself in many online communities that made me feel seen when the real world didn’t.

Because of the internet, I am able to express my eclectic personality with more confidence. I strive to keep finding the beauty in these digital interactions, fostering safe environments for love and joy to be shared in!

Feel free to check out this short video I made for an art project while studying in London! It is about the beauty of digital intimacy in online spaces.

My story. 🎮

I grew up in an Asian-American household that believed indulging in videogames and cartoons created unfocused and lazy kids. Because of this, I stopped engaging in these mediums for almost 10 years.

Freshly stepping into adulthood, I knew deep down that I couldn’t continue denying my love for animation and gaming; they always found their way into my heart through YouTube videos and sketchbook doodles. When the pandemic hit in my freshman year of college, I took a leap of faith and spent all of my savings on a Nintendo Switch (and then a PC). It was the best decision of my life.

I was suddenly reminded of all the late nights spent on Minecraft and Roblox building gravity-defying skyscrapers and entering PvP battles with friends on Skype.

  • I transported to a time where everything felt like an adventure and a story to tell.

  • I was now able to recognize that animation and gaming inspired my creativity, challenged my critical thinking skills and taught me how to fail enthusiastically.

I loved digital storytelling so much, I switched my major from Ethnic Studies to Media Studies within one year.

Many friends privately reached out to me, describing their interest in playing games too. However, they said that they felt too intimidated or confused to try. Others felt embarrassed for liking cartoons because of its association with immaturity.

This widespread dissonance ignited a fire within me; I wanted to figure out how to better bridge the gap between digital art and society. How can I best advocate for video games and cartoons and prove their impact for social good?

As a recent grad, I aim to continue learning about the beautifully complicated world of digital and interactive media. Every day is an opportunity for me to think of new ideas. Now, I hope to apply them in the working world.

TLDR; My goal is to increase accessibility to games and explore its potential for social good.
