I wanted to demonstrate a *portion* of my impact on HTC's discord server by showing a heartwarming conversation I had in #general-chat with a seasoned engineer working in AI and VR technology (with some cuts for brevity):

Sample Conversation with a User:

Context: Discussing a recent product that @User had to return due to hardware flaws, this is the second half of the conversation

@User:

When I say "corners were cut" it could have happened at any number of levels. [text cut] I don't believe any of it was done out of laziness or malice.

@Me:

Your charitability and openness is really admirable. I know some people like to immediately question a company's values when they feel unsatisfied with a product/project (which I can understand at times; I've done it too). I am sure that an error occurred at some point in the long, layered process... and I am curious in figuring out what happened alongside everyone here. From personal experience, I feel a connection with the team @ HTC and can tell that they really care. Our team is pretty intimate (we message the team in Taiwan every single day) and we are all trying to improve as much as we can. Thank you again!

@User:

Nobody sets out to make a terrible product. Your presence, @mod2, @mod3 and the rest in a community discord tell me so much - the people who are involved LISTEN, and that will shape decisions. [text cut] I wouldn't stay in this discord if I had no faith that HTC would continue to make good headsets 😸 I also would not mind talking to others in the community about games, PC hardware and custom PCs, 3D printing, and anything else to help them enjoy their headsets even if I don't have one right now. Community support is love.

@Me:

Your message makes me feel a little emotional to be honest! My faith in humanity is quite high after hearing how much everyone cares about strong communication and community. [text cut] Working at HTC, I have really tried to prioritize being transparent and open to conversation + feedback. I believe that fans and users keep games and tech ALIVE. Without us (I am saying as a one myself), the world is empty and uninspiring. I spend most of my time watching Youtube mod videos or analysis essays!

Same for tech: the creative solutions and technological discoveries people have achieved on this server has been so inspiring to see. Even hearing your backstory @User, I appreciate how involved you are in the evolution of technology to see it become as great as it can be. That inspiration, creativity and passion is what matters most to me. I guess it's always not the core purpose of a business, but it may be the goal of those who work within the business.

@User:

I'm touched - thank you. I really, really want this tech to succeed. It helped me so much with mental health (escapism) during the pandemic and the terrifying wildfires a few years ago, helped me lose at least 45 pounds so far, and has brought me into different worlds. Not to mention all the potential benefits it can have in business and industry. Enthusiasts make things happen. Without enthusiasts for early PDAs, we wouldn't have smartphones now.

@Me:

Like I said before, there are many who are scared of AI, and then there are engineers and developers that are so excited that they can barely sit still. We can really improve our quality-of-life with technology if we use it right. As a Media Studies major, I care about analyzing the effects of technology so that we know how to establish a healthy relationship with it (considering philosophy, ethics, etc.) while also reaping the benefits and making our society more accessible.
